Kurt Martin Thallmayer, 38, passed away peacefully today following a long battle with Leukemia. He was the beloved husband of Evey Thallmayer, brother Steve Thallmayer, and loving son of Erich Thallmayer and Andree Van Rensburg. He is survived by a loving family of Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and a large group of friends that loved him very much. His lasting tribute will be all the lives he touched and all the friends who considered him family, all of whom will never forget his wit, his generosity, and his courage.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Kurt's name to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at www.lls.org.
Thank you all for standing by Kurt's side, every step of his battle and throughout the incredible life that he led.
Details for Kurt's Celebration of Life will be posted here in the next few days.

What an incredible gift Kurt gave all of us by documenting his experiences during this long fight against this disease. Just reading through all of these posts you see his heart, determination and his love for everyone in his life. I'm happy that he had Evey and all of his family and countless friends to show him their love and support. Evey, I want to give you the biggest hug and comfort you during this even though we don't know each other well. You both had true love for one another and that's obvious. I will continue to pray for strength for you and all of Kurt's family. God is with you during this even though you may not feel it. I know he is. Thank you Kurt for your strength and courage you showed us. You will be missed.

It does not seem real to say the words goodbye and mark the end to the courageous three years Kurt spent battling leukemia. Kurt’s body endured radiation, chemo and countless medications. Then he had to learn about new conditions like GVHD, VOD, and atrial flutter, from the outside each seemed scarier and scarier.

So many days, nights and holidays spent inside hospital walls. Our few nights at Hoag show me that Evey was truly an angel for Kurt, not leaving his side night after night. Their love and devotion to each other is incomparable. No one thought that for one moment that we would ever have to stop hoping for a miracle, because Kurt proved to us that he was a miracle time and time again.

Kurt and Evey were an unstoppable team in our eyes. Evey is one of the strongest people I know and very few people have her courage to throw 150% of themselves into a relationship, but also into the wellness, care and daily battle of AML. I am beyond sad for your loss honey. I am here for you my friend Ev, just as you have been there for me. We will miss Kurt dearly, eternally.

And to Kurt’s family that I have spent more and more time with, I am sorry for your loss. You have all been so loving and supportive to Evey, her family/friends and for each other. This was very special to see firsthand.

With much love,
Natasha

Dear Kurt- where do I even begin to express the hole that is felt in my heart and all those that have had the pleasure of knowing you are right now. I have the best memories of our trip to Mardi Gras back in 1999 when I first met you and knew then you were a lifer friend. And wow what a treat when you actually started dating and then married one of my very best friends Evey Gonzalez Thallmayer. I was your number one fan encouraging that relationship from the start because I knew what a great guy you were! Evey is more like a sister to me and I knew you were the quality of a guy all the way around that I had always hoped for my friend. You both loved and cared for one another in the way that we all hope to be loved and cared for. You were always kind hearted, level headed and dependable even to those that you barely knew. I remember on one trip to Mammoth you picking up a random guy on the side of the road that had run out of gas and you invited him into your Durango without a second thought to help when many would just drive by. The way you treated people speaks volumes in your character and will not be forgotten in the way you have touched so many. You lived life with zest and is a reminder to myself to take nothing for granted and always live life to the fullest. You are so loved and missed and I want you to know I will be looking after your beautiful wife in your absence so don't you worry! Love you! Shannon

Although I haven't had the opportunity to spend too much time with Kurt, it's easy to see how quickly he made fantastic friends!

I was very suprised when he reached out to help me when he was deeply involved with his own health issues. What a great guy.

Kurt is an inspiration to all of us and the strongest person I've ever known. He taught us all a great lesson with how much he appreciated his "day at home with his dog." I know I'll stop and make sure I enjoy every day, and "my day at home with my dog."

Thank you, Kurt. JohnC.

Dear Evey and the Thallmayer family,

I was so saddened to hear the news of Kurt’s passing. Though the pain is great now, may you soon find solace knowing that he’s finally at peace and free from all his earthly pains. Kurt’s grace and courage throughout his illness is a testimony of what a wonderful man he was in his short lifetime. His blog brought me inspiration during a time when my own sister was fighting her battle. For sharing with us his story, I thank him. By that simple act, he made us feel that we weren’t alone in our struggles. It brought us together like a family joined in our common fight to end cancers. And like a family, together we’ll all mourn for our loss. May Kurt rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon him. My thoughts and prayers to you all.

All my best,

Gia
