Today was a very difficult day. As many of you are probably already aware, the German team lost to the Spanish today in the EuroCup final. I honestly can't say I'm too terribly surprised, but still sucks non the less. The Spanish ran them all over the field and the Germans had very little in return. With all that said, I am a good loser and the Spanish deserved to win. My hat goes off to them and to all of their fans.

Other than that, the day has gone very well. Had most of the family down for the game which as we all know could have gone better, but it was still nice to have the group here. I still feel strong and really don't feel like I am on my 5th day of chemo on a 7 day treatment, but I don't have a whole lot of illusions about this either. I know the hammer will fall soon enough and I'll be feeling the pains of the chemo, but until then I'll be living it up and enjoying it.

We are still waiting for some test results to come back that will tell us what potential next steps are after my induction chemotherapy, but we did get some good news about the potential bone marrow transplant today. The board which governs the process here at the hospital has voted to put me on the transplant list which means we can start to move forward with premiliminary match testing. Things still have to be sorted out on the insurance side, but once that is done, they will check my brother Steve to see if he is a bone marrow match which holds a 25% probability. If Steve does not turn out to be a match, then they will go out to a global bone marrow donor database and see if there are any potential matches out there. This is all still a long way off, but wanted to give you some insight as to some of the conversations we are starting to have as far as next steps go. Things could change on a daily basis, and as they do we will keep you informed. Once again, thanks for taking the time to read and make comments. It is our way of staying connected to you and we appreciate your thoughts.

A man goes to the doctor and says, "Doc, I would like to live very long. What should I do?"

"I think that is a wise decision," the doctor replies. "Let's see, do you smoke?"

"Oh.. Half a pack a day."

"Starting NOW, no more smoking." The man agrees.

The doctor then asks, "Do you drink?"

"Oh, well Doc, not much, just a bit of wine with my meals, and a beer or two every once in a while."

"Starting now, you drink only water. No exceptions."

The man is a bit upset, but also agrees.

The doctor asks, "How do you eat?"

"Oh, well, you know, Doc, normal stuff."

"Starting now you are going on a very strict diet. You are going to eat only raw vegetables, with no dressing, and non-fat cottage cheese."

The man is now really worried. "Doc, is all this really necessary?"

"Do you want to live long?"

"Yes."

"Well then, it's absolutely necessary. And don't even think of breaking the diet." The man is quite restless, but the doctor continues, "Do you have sex?"

"Yeah, once a week or so..., only with my wife!" he adds hurriedly.

"As soon as you get out of here you are going to buy twin beds. No more sex for you. None."

The man is appalled. "Doc... Are you sure I'm going to live longer this way?"

"I have no idea, but whatever you live, I assure you is going to seem like an eternity!"

Kurt,
I too was sad to see Germany lose but they were definately out played! I wanted to let you know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers since your brother first told me. I know that you have great support from your core family and friends but I wanted to let you know that I am here if needed for anything at all (even if it's catching waves for you... That's the kind of guy I am, a giver). Keep up the fight, you can beat this!

Between Mike and Steve we have been told of what you are going thru. It certainly doesn't seem like 20 years since Mission Viejo, but through Steve, we have kept abreast of all his high school friends.
Kurt, stay strong, keep the attitude brave, and soak up all the love that is being sent your way. Our prayers are with you.

Hey my man... Great to see you on Saturday. Keep your spirits up. I heard the Sling Box was working so that's cool. Nice to Evey taking good care of you, making sure she...I mean you eat enough:). Take it easy man.. Talk to you soon.

Steve

Steve has kept me updated but this blog is an incredible idea.
Evey, keep your tears to a minimum, (save em for the wedding) and continue to be the rock of conviction and strength that Kurt needs you to be.
Kurt, OBLITERATE this thing. You have yet to look into Evey's eyes as her husband and so much more life to live! Nothing but positivity and wishes of wellness are sent your way. You are both in our thoughts and prayers. Hold hands, kiss and laugh with each other every day.
Oh..and watch Shawshank Redemption one more time. Talk about a feel good!

If the worst part of your day was Germany losing then Praise the Lord.

They aren't really that good anyway. J/K

My thoughts and prayers are with you KNOW that everything will be okay in the end, and if it isn't okay, then it isn't the end. :0)

Miss you, Love you more!

What is Kurt's diagnosis?

AML is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts (a type of white blood cell), red blood cells, or platelets.

Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. This type of cancer usually gets worse quickly if it is not treated. It is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. AML is also called acute myelogenous leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute granulocytic leukemia, and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.
