Day + 174

Good morning everyone. I usually write these late at night so it's kind of weird saying that. I guess I'll start by saying I'm happy I was able to give you all a nice laugh. It seems you all enjoy hearing about me wallowing in pain and misery. I know, I know, I brought that all upon myself, but how about a little sympathy for the kid. Of course I'm joking. I think I got the biggest laugh of all out of that situation. And trust me, even laughing soon turned into crying due to the extreme pain I was in. Anyhow, I'm glad you were all entertained by that. I can't say I did anything like that during this period so my muscles have been nice and normal.

Things have been good, but I have been battling an outbreak on my skin which is a reaction to the sun caused by my medication and the chemo I went through. Luckily these aren't abrasions or anything like that, it basically shows up as redness, but it's all over my stomach, chest, back, shoulders and face. It is a little bit itchy but luckily very manageable. My doctors took a skin biopsy out of my back last week to make sure it is GVHD (Graft vs. Host Disease) which is a technical term for rejection. Yes it is rejection, but it is nothing to be too concerned about. Of course if I don't do anything about it, it can spread and get worse, but I am treating it regularly with a strong cream so it should be gone in no time. It's been here for a couple of weeks so I'm hoping the end is near. We shall see.

As I said above, things have been good but I still have some bad days mixed in every now and then. As I get further and further away from my transplant date, it gets more and more frustrating for me to have these bad days. I know they are a part of the process and I just have to deal with them and hope they become more and more infrequent. With that said, my medication has a lot to do with how frequent those bad days are and unfortunately, with this skin situation going on, some of my medications have been increased. This will hopefully be short term and I'll be on the road to lowering my meds again in no time.

As far as my counts go, they dropped a bit last week which goes hand in hand with the GVHD I'm experiencing. My white blood cells dropped from 5 to 4.2 with my platelets following suit going from 191 to 157. My red blood cells counts and hematocrit stayed in the same range of 12 and 36 respectively. I fully expect to have these counts go back to normal as I fix this GVHD problem.

Well my friends, it's another beautiful day in sunny so cal so make sure you get out there at some point today and enjoy it. You owe it to yourself. Take care everyone and make sure you either start smiling or keep smiling. We'll catch up again soon.

Sorry to hear about the skin thing, sounds like you're on the track of getting it taken care of though. I'm on Spring Break and being lazy so, your post has inspired me to get out and enjoy HB a little today. We are having so much fun in the new house. Can't wait to have you and Evey up again soon. You should bring Floyd and we can take him to Dog Beach.
Take Care,
J

Hey Kurt:
It's been a while, but I wanted to say Hi again.
I'll tell you what, the golf thing hit home. Don't know if Van may have mentioned it, but I had some back surgery about a year ago. I've felt fine since, but they absolutely told me to stay away from the golf clubs. So, it's been that long for me too. This week, though, it's back to the range for the first time. I think 30, maybe 40 balls, definitely not 118. You've given me fair warning!!

Take good care,
Wood

Servus Kurti,

just wanted to say hi, as you haven`t heard from me in a while. Things are good here in bavaria. The sun is out for 2 weeks now and this makes even the grumpy bavarians happy. We already had the chance to bbq last weekend with perfect chilled Weizen on our patio. You would have loved it! Our baby is coming in the next few weeks, we are all really looking forward to it. Most of all Birgit with her huge baby belly :) Take care, hope to see you soon! Say hi to everyone!

Hi Kurt, was so cool reading about your round of golf. Good for you! You have overcome so many milestones that we all take for granted and it's humbling. Still buzzing over the news of you and Evey creating a life together, forever. You guys will make beautiful babies and be dog ass tired forever. Yahoooo!!!

It is hard to see you looking so healthy but quietly suffering pains that none of could even begin to understand. Not fair for one second!!! I'm glad you were able to spend some nice time with Glenn, like old times. I was just happy to tag along. Have a wonderful weekend with this warm weather, but no extra sun just yet.

Hang in there buddy. If you want to feel better, we should get together sometime and swap rash stories. Those single-college days were crazy I tell ya!

Take it easy man and keep up the good work!

Hi Kurt,
Still checking for news every day, and hold my breath for a while until I read that you're doing fairly well! Actually you seem to be doing very well, compared to the time when your muscles were so sore. We live and learn huh, about what we can do and what we can't. At my age, I've learned a lot about physical pain after exercising, so now I just don't exercise - simple as that!!

I'm following the progress of a lady who had her bone marrow transplant about a month ago and the poor thing is struggling with stomach pain. She is still in hospital and on a diet of a few sips of broth and applesauce. She was home for a few days and then had to go back to hospital for more platelets etc. Today, I read that the stomach cramps have tapered off a bit, so that's a good sign.

Stay inside with your rash in this awful heatwave. Take care Kurt, and I'll continue to pray for you every day.

Lots of love -

Peta

Hope that your skin rash is doing much better. Cannot wait to see you walking the Ingram halls again.
Stay cool in this hot weather and look forward to reading how you are doing. Take Care, Michelle

What is Kurt's diagnosis?

AML is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts (a type of white blood cell), red blood cells, or platelets.

Adult Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. This type of cancer usually gets worse quickly if it is not treated. It is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults. AML is also called acute myelogenous leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia, acute granulocytic leukemia, and acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.
